Some immediately see it as a sign of serious illness; others, on the contrary, pay little attention to it. Why, exactly, do gums bleed? What are the possible causes? If this happens to you\u2014whether you are in Geneva or elsewhere\u2014you are far from alone. Most often, this bleeding reflects gum inflammation (gingivitis) or periodontal disease. This is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msdmanuals.com\/fr\/accueil\/troubles-bucco-dentaires\/parodontopathies\/gingivite\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">most common cause<\/a> of gingivitis. <\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"parodontite\">Periodontitis<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"link\">The inflammation that is no longer contained in the gum then reaches the deep periodontium (cementum, ligament and alveolar bone): this is periodontitis.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Prevalence<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"link\">According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/34101223\/#:~:text=Results%3A%20In%202019%2C%20there%20were,6.62%25%2D10.59%25)%20worldwide.\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">GBD 2021<\/a> synthesis, 20 to 50% of the world&#8217;s population has active periodontitis, and 8 to 19% <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC11884469\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a severe form<\/a>. In Switzerland, the national cohort &#8220;Swiss Oral Health Monitoring&#8221; reports that nearly one in two adults over 45 already shows visible bone loss on radiography. <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Warning Signs<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Pockets \u2265 4 mm, gingival recession, slight mobility, persistent bad breath.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Recent aggravating factors:<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"link\">Poorly controlled diabetes (<a href=\"https:\/\/access.archive-ouverte.unige.ch\/access\/metadata\/84f847e4-4d36-49b3-bb47-2bcc521ce592\/download\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">risk x 2 to x 3<\/a>)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Regular smoking (up to +70% bone loss)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Chronic vitamin D deficiency: correlated with increased periodontal inflammatory activity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading link\"><strong>Why it is critical:<\/strong> <\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"link\">Periodontitis is now classified as a co-factor for cardiovascular diseases and type 2 diabetes. Result: they become inflamed more easily (pregnancy gingivitis) and may bleed. <\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading blog-title-h2\" id=\"carence-en-vitamines\">Vitamin Deficiency<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"link\">A deficiency in vitamins B2, B3, B6, B9, B12, C or D weakens the mucous membranes. Vitamin C is particularly involved: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msdmanuals.com\/fr\/accueil\/troubles-bucco-dentaires\/parodontopathies\/gingivite#v27717069_fr\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">when it is lacking<\/a>, gingival bleeding increases\u2014especially in children\u2014and often improves as soon as the deficiency is corrected. <\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"effets-secondaires-medicaments\">Medication Side Effects<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"link\">Certain treatments can increase gum bleeding, particularly anticoagulants (aspirin, clopidogrel, heparin, etc.).
